The NFU Mourns the Passing and Celebrates the Life of Cathleen Kneen

The National Farmers Union was saddened by news of Cathleen Kneen’s death on February 21, 2016. “Cathleen Kneen was a cherished friend of the NFU,” said Jan Slomp, NFU President. “Her leadership in the food movement was pivotal. She was like a rock, standing up for food justice and gender equity.” Many NFU members will remember Cathleen for her leadership in Food Secure Canada, the Peoples Food Policy Project and BC Food Systems Network; for her writing, artwork and analysis in The Ram’s Horn, which she co-published with her husband, Brewster; from her participation in many of our National Conventions, including as a panel speaker in 2007; as a social justice activist in all the communities she lived in and organizations she belonged to across Canada; and as a farmer and gardener, advocate, friend, mentor and visionary. “Cathleen changed the world one relationship at a time,” added Joan Brady, former NFU Women’s President. “We carry her indomitable spirit, warmth and integrity with us as we continue to bring forward food sovereignty as the solution for a healthy, sustainable Canada.” The NFU offers our solidarity and sympathy to her family at this time. We share in the celebration of her life and in the knowledge that Cathleen would encourage us to continue the fight for a food secure future for all. We will miss her.
