Jasper is an opaque, impure variety of silica in the form of chalcedony or microcrystalline chert. Generally it forms near volcanic activity and the circulation of hot water is thought to be required for its formation. The deeply integrated colours of brecciated jasper come from iron oxide and organic material embedded into this form of chalcedony. Its texture can be dramatically fragmented or have smooth swirls of colours that include brick red, creams, dark chocolate brown and earthy blacks and tans.
